Every great city is shaped by the people who invest their lives in it. Metro Detroit is no exception.
Among the communities that have helped build our region, the Jewish community has played an extraordinary role. Its influence reaches far beyond synagogues and neighborhoods. It can be seen in our architecture, businesses, hospitals, schools, charitable organizations, arts, and civic life. For more than a century, Jewish men and women have helped make Metro Detroit one of America’s most vibrant communities.
Building Detroit’s Skyline
Perhaps no individual better represents that legacy than Albert Kahn, often called the “Architect of Detroit.”
His firm designed hundreds of buildings that transformed the city, including factories that powered America’s industrial growth, magnificent office buildings, schools, hospitals, and landmarks like the Fisher Building. His influence reached around the world, but his greatest legacy remains right here in Metro Detroit. Detroit simply would not look the same without Albert Kahn’s vision.
A Commitment to Community
One of the strengths of the Jewish community has always been its commitment to serving others.
The Jewish Federation of Detroit has spent more than one hundred years supporting families, strengthening education, caring for seniors, responding to emergencies, and investing in the future of Jewish life while partnering with agencies that benefit the broader community. Its work quietly touches thousands of lives every year.
A Community Center for Everyone
Many Metro Detroiters have visited The J – Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit in West Bloomfield, whether for fitness, concerts, children’s activities, art exhibits, summer camps, or educational programs.
Although deeply rooted in Jewish culture and tradition, The J has long welcomed people from every background. It has become a gathering place where friendships are formed, families grow, and neighbors come together through recreation, culture, and lifelong learning.
Compassion at Life’s End
As someone who served for many years as a hospice chaplain, I have a special appreciation for one remarkable local ministry.
The Jewish Hospice & Chaplaincy Network provides compassionate end-of-life spiritual care rooted in Jewish faith and tradition while serving patients and families throughout Metro Detroit. It has become a nationally respected model for combining hospice care with religious support, ensuring that people are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect during life’s most difficult moments.
Remembering History
Metro Detroit is also home to one of America’s most important centers for Holocaust education.
The Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills preserves the memory of the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust while teaching future generations about the dangers of hatred, antisemitism, prejudice, and totalitarianism. Founded by Holocaust survivors, it was the first free-standing Holocaust memorial institution of its kind in the United States and continues to educate tens of thousands of students and visitors each year.
Every Metro Detroit family should consider visiting this extraordinary museum.
Leaders Across Every Field
The Jewish contribution to our region extends far beyond these institutions.
Jewish entrepreneurs have helped build businesses large and small. Physicians have advanced medical care. Attorneys, educators, researchers, musicians, artists, engineers, philanthropists, and public servants have strengthened every corner of our community.
Organizations such as Jewish Family Service of Metro Detroit continue a long tradition of helping people through counseling, senior services, mental health care, transportation, food assistance, and family support—often serving anyone in need, regardless of religious background.
Looking Forward Together
One of the joys of living in Metro Detroit is learning from one another.
As a Christian pastor, I believe we grow stronger when we understand the histories and traditions of our neighbors. We may worship differently, yet we often share common values—faith, family, education, generosity, compassion, and service to others.
The Jewish community has helped shape the Metro Detroit we know today. Their story is part of our story.
As we celebrate the people who have built this region, may we continue working together to make Metro Detroit a place where every community can flourish.
