What started as a local event quickly gained momentum, far surpassing its original intent.
Woodward Avenue, often referred to as “America’s First Highway,” has long been a hub of car culture, especially during the 1950s and 60s when it was a hotspot for Detroit’s car manufacturers and street racing. The Dream Cruise sought to recapture the spirit of this golden era. The first event in 1995 was expected to draw about 25,000 people, but to everyone’s surprise, it attracted over 250,000 spectators and nearly 10,000 classic cars. Over the years, the Woodward Dream Cruise has grown into the largest one-day automotive event in the world. Every third Saturday in August, more than a million people and over 40,000 classic cars from all over the United States and beyond converge on a 16-mile stretch of Woodward Avenue, which runs through several Detroit suburbs.
