Kresge Foundation Launches Art X Detroit to Celebrate Artistic Excellence and the City’s Creative Spirit April 6-10, 2011

As part of Art X Detroit, an arts experience happening in Midtown, April 6-10, Kresge Artist Fellow Chido Johnson held the first-ever “Wire Car Cruise” on Woodward Avenue in front of the Detroit Institute of Arts in Detroit.
A native of Zimbabwe, Johnson is bringing the art of making cars out of wire that become mobilized by being pushed with a stick to Detroit – a cultural practice popular in the southern and central regions of Africa.
More than 50 individuals who participated in wire car workshops led by Johnson over the last two months cruised down Woodward Avenue with their “dream car” to the song of their choice. A video documentary of the performance will be featured in the visual arts exhibition of Art X Detroit at MOCAD, and the wire cars will be on display at Tech Town’s new Tech II building (located at 6160 Cass) throughout the month of April. This recorded performance is titled a dance for Diego to honor and re-live Diego’s conversation on Detroit as a culture of makers and dreamers. About Chido:
Chido Johnson was born in Nyadiri, Zimbabwe. He received Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Sculpture in 1996 and in Painting, with a minor in Drawing, in 1997 from the University of Georgia, Athens. He obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from the University of Notre Dame in 2000. Currently, he teaches at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. He has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally.
