Upgrades to outdated and malfunctioning freeway lights in the Detroit area are being made starting this week.
The Michigan Department of Transportation says of the about 15,000 freeway lights in the Detroit metropolitan area, 87 percent are currently high-pressure sodium or metal halide fixtures. Plans call for replacing those lights with energy-efficient LED lights.
MDOT says Freeway Lighting Partners, a public-private partnership, will be doing upgrades in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. A 15-year contract mandates that 90 percent of the freeway lights be operational after the first year and 98 percent after the second year.
MDOT says details on when and where crews will be working will be posted online.
