The Trip to Bountiful is the story of Carrie Watts, a widow who longs to escape the cramped Houston apartment she shares with her son and daughter-in-law. She wants to visit her hometown of Bountiful one last time. Thwarted by her family who believes she is too frail for the trip, Carrie finally breaks away to the train station. In her travels she turns to strangers to help make her dream come true. The Trip to Bountiful is a bittersweet tale of recapturing love and compassion in a world that no longer seems to care. Carrie’s dream and determination recreate tender memories of days past for those whose lives she touches along the way.
Background
The Trip to Bountiful was originally conceived as a television play, which premiered March 1, 1953 on NBC-TV, directed by Vincent J. Donehue, who also directed the play with Lillian Gish as Carrie Watts. Later that year, the show went on to play in east coast theatres and on to Broadway, where it played 39 performances. Perhaps the most widely-known version of The Trip to Bountiful is the 1985 film directed by Peter Masterson and starring Geraldine Page, who won Academy and Golden Globe awards for her portrayal of Carrie Watts.
