SHE LOVES ME
A Charming Musical Comedy That Inspired the Hit Movie You’ve Got Mail Takes Bloomfield Hills Stage in January.
The musical comedy She Loves Me will be presented by St. Dunstan Theatre Guild of Cranbrook from January 20 through February 4, 2012. The charming, family friendly story revolves around Amalia (Kate Deborre of Royal Oak) and Georg (Jeff Faust of Canton), two sales clerks who don’t like each other and are unaware that they are secretly writing love notes to each other through a Lonely Hearts Club. If this sounds familiar it’s because She Loves Me is based on a film called Shop Around The Corner, which also inspired the movie You’ve Got Mail.
Other quirky sales people include ladies man-Stephen Kodaly (Chris Steinmayer of Oak Park), Ladislov Sipos (Ben Ludwig of Bloomfield Hills), Ilona Ritter (Suzette Ho of Royal Oak) and Arpad (16 year old Niko Bokos of Birmingham). Revolving around a Parfumerie in 1934 Budapest, owned by Mr. Maracezek (John Hujli of Waterford) the show has a large cast of colorful customers and passersby including Sandra Prokopp of Huntington Woods, Pam Richards of Waterford, Laurie Dooley of Troy, Valarie Mould of Royal Oak (who is also the show’s choreographer), John D. Tonkovich of Canton, Nat Towle of Bingham Farms, Jake Zinke of Canton and Anthony Marsalese of Bingham Farms (who is also helping with music interpretation along with designing the makeup and wigs for the 1934 time period).
“The show is a classic that debuted on Broadway the same year as Hello Dolly,Oliver and West Side Story so needless to say it had some pretty stiff competition.She Loves Me is a very entertaining show with delightful music and amazing talent both on and off stage,” says Jeff Davison (Bingham Farms), the show’s director. Adding “it’s a simple love story about two people that fall in love and can’t stand each other.”
The set, an art piece in itself was designed by Monika Essen, who most recently designed the set and costumes for Carmina Burana at The Detroit Opera House this past October. Complimenting the set are period 1934 costumes designed by Kathy Shapero (Birmingham) and Roz Basherian (Bloomfield Village).
