Shalom Street, the experiential Jewish children’s museum at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield, will celebrate its eighth birthday and host Chanukah Open House: The Magic of Shalom Street on Sunday, December 11, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
This free event is open to the community and features many family friendly activities including strolling magic, magic crafts, Chanukah treats and the current exhibit, “Tales of Our Tribes.”
Children are invited to become a Magical Maccabee at 12:30 p.m. with Hands-on Magic, where they can create their own trick and learn magic. All families are asked to help the magic of the season come to someone in need by bringing a hat, scarf, glove or mittens, to be donated to local families.
Shalom Street is open to the public from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and on Sunday. Regular events include craft projects for children and interactive opportunities for families. The current exhibit, which allows guests to learn about the 12 tribes of ancient Israel, was designed by local artist Jennifer Maiseloff and funded by the Charles H. Gershenson Trust.
Shalom Street regularly presents interactive Jewish cultural exhibits of all kinds. Recent exhibits have focused on Jewish superheroes and comic book creators, Ethiopian culture and art, experiential archaeological digs and opportunities to encounter legendary artists like Maurice Sendak and Marc Chagall. The museum also offers group tours and programs.
