Proceeds of event to benefit DIA
Founders Junior Council (FJC), the young professionals auxiliary for the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), is hosting Samurai: Beyond the Sword Artseen on Thursday, May 1, at the DIA from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., celebrating the exhibition Samurai: Beyond the Sword, which explores both the military and cultural arts of Japan’s revered samurai.
With a nod to the exhibition, ArtSeen attendees will be treated to a sushi and sake tasting from 6:30 to 8 p.m., followed by aikido demonstrations, music, light appetizers and a cash bar. Guests will also have the opportunity to view the exhibition in a more intimate setting.
“Samurai: Beyond the Sword is such a unique exhibition; we had to take advantage of the opportunity to throw a one-of-a-kind party,” said Blake Ellis, FJC president. “Between the sake, sushi and swords, we hope to really capture the energy of the exhibition and give our guests a night to remember.”
Samurai: Beyond the Sword offers an in-depth look at the samurai, who sought balance between military and cultural pursuits. The exhibition explores artworks that project the image of the samurai not only as fierce warriors but also as patrons of the arts and sophisticated artists and scholars during the relatively peaceful Edo period (1603–1868).
Tickets for ArtSeen are $70 for FJC members and $85 for nonmembers and are available at dia.org/fjc or by calling (313) 833-4005. Purchase includes 2 drink tickets. Valet parking will be available. Limited tickets will be available at the door; advance registration is recommended.
