Success can be exponential when it comes to reading. This is especially true for kids who have struggled with reading throughout their early years of schooling. For many kids, reading occurs naturally and effortlessly. Yet for some it’s an agonizing experience because they compare themselves with others and find themselves less than capable. The anxiety that comes with this creates additional learning problems because confidence is 95% of learning!
Public schools provide little support for students who have something more than a superficial impediment. The one on one diagnosis and remediation that is required is frequently impossible in their crowded classrooms; furthermore, as schools reduce their budgets, the luxury of having a reading specialist is often put on the bucket list. Considering that 70% of all incarcerated adults cannot read at a 4th grade level, it is a mystery why reading remediation is not considered a necessity.
The good news if that there are many area private clinics in the Detroit area that are picking up the slack. The one that we’ll focus on is the new Rochester Brain-Based Literacy and Learning. Tucked away, close to Rochester High School, it was opened a year ago and has already begun a wait list for students.
Interactive Metronome, a research supported intervention, is being used to facilitate the necessary growth that students need. This intervention “measures & improves Neurotiming, or the synchronization of neural impulses within key brain networks for cognitive, communicative, sensory & motor performance.” Neurotiming is an essential component for reading and comprehension. It has also been found to sooth anxiety and boost levels of confidence. Treatment generally takes from twelve to fifteen visits and sessions are for one hour. When this technology is combined with skilled remediation that pinpoints skill development, kids are the winners for a lifetime.
