Pontiac woman shares the key to living to 100 — reading, writing, singing and drinking beer

Edna Frances (Scully) Messinger, who turns 100 years old on Monday, Aug. 17, still reads The Oakland Press everyday.

She makes sure she is up-to-date on all current events and politics. She is a lover of the written word, writes poetry and has a memorable party trick — off the top of her head, she can spell almost any word backwards.

“This continues to amaze her friends and family who sometimes can hardly spell forwards,” said her daughter Nancy Platt.

Messinger said she is proud to be born in the same year that women nationwide were able to vote for the first time in the presidential election. Platt said, to this day, her mother remains sharp and happy and still enjoys drinking beer at Kennedys Irish Pub in Pontiac.
