World War II planes thundered over the Detroit River on Friday to kick off this year’s GM River Days celebration. The air show, staged by the Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum, features aerobatic pilots along with vintage aircraft.
Performances are scheduled for 4 p.m. today and Sunday. River Days is packed with exhibits and events, including: tall ships, sand sculptures, outdoor fun for kids sponsored by the state Department of Natural Resources, crafts sponsored by cultural institutions like the Detroit Institute of Arts, a zip line, food trucks and live music.
Rhythm and blues singer Patti LaBelle performs starting at 8:30 tonight; Jeffrey Osborne appears Sunday starting at 6:45 p.m.
The event takes place along the Detroit riverfront, from the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority Terminal & Dock just west of the GM Renaissance Center, to Rivard Plaza and the William G. Milliken State Park. Admission is $3 before 3 p.m. and $5 afterward to support the nonprofit Detroit RiverFront Conservancy.
