Dave Strubler of South Burlington has been named Dean of Champlain College’s Division of Business by Champlain President David F. Finney. Strubler joins Champlain with more than 30 years of business, non-profit, higher education management and teaching experience.
He comes to Champlain from Kettering University in Michigan where he served for 16 years in a variety of graduate, corporate, and business education roles. He has worked for large international automotive research and development center and a small business education company, both in southeastern Michigan.
Strubler said his focus at Champlain will be on co-branding with and serving Vermont businesses and non-profits, enhancing professional cross-disciplinary degree options, and extending internship, entrepreneurship, global, and social responsibility opportunities for students.
Champlain College’s Division of Business is uniquely positioned to engage students in what he calls “work-integrated learning,” a value-proposition about which all students, parents, and employers should be excited. “At a time when the value of higher education is being questioned nationwide, Champlain’s business program bridges practice and theory in a professional educational environment that reaches out to the business community. Students should hit the ground running when they walk into an employer’s door.”
Strubler is stepping into a just-redesigned business curriculum created by his practitioner/scholar business faculty. They recently launched a new Creative Media Management degree and are expecting to release a Management and Innovation degree during the next year. A series of four new integrated business-experience courses will differentiate Champlain from most programs by interweaving subjects such as accounting, finance, marketing, information technology and management into a single course. According to Strubler, this classroom model is much closer to how business really functions and teaches students to communicate across functions and think critically out-of-the-box.
Says Strubler,” It’s all about synergy. The integration of science, arts, business and education is not only possible, it is necessary for a thriving community and meaningful life.”
Prior to his industry experience, he was a human resource manager at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Early in his career, Strubler designed, developed, and directed a wilderness challenge program for troubled youth. He holds a Ph.D. from Wayne State University. His applied research interests include entrepreneurship, international management, teamwork, and ethics.
The new dean has been married for 27 years to Ann Ourada Strubler who recently retired from a 30-year career in the first violin section of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The Strubler’s were active in community service, especially in the arts, while raising their three sons (now grown) in Rochester, Michigan. Strubler is also an experienced outdoor enthusiast who led an expedition on Alaska’s Mt. McKinley, climbed 25 – 14,000-foot peaks, rafted many of the nation’s whitewater rivers, and biked from Michigan to Vermont.
