This is a quote worth remembering: President Donald Trump made these remarks at the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, 2026.
Here is the key portion of his statement:
“What they don’t realize is that I’m not running. I did that already and won in a landslide.”
He continued by saying he would remain president for another two and a half years, that Republicans were running in the midterms, and that he would help them.
One Election. Many Issues. Your Decision.
The Midterm Election s Are Not About Trump They’re About the Direction of America
Donald Trump will undoubtedly dominate many headlines between now and Election Day. His supporters will defend him. His opponents will attack him. Television commentators will analyze almost everything through the lens of Trump.
But Republicans can make a much simpler case for the 2026 midterm elections:
This election is bigger than Donald Trump. It is about the direction of the United States of America.
On November 3, Americans will elect every member of the U.S. House of Representatives whose seat is up in the regular cycle and vote in Senate races across the country. They will also choose governors, state legislators and thousands of other officials at the state and local levels. The names on those ballots matter because government decisions affect everyday life. From a Republican perspective, voters should be asking questions such as these: What kind of economy do we want? Republicans generally argue for lower taxes, less federal regulation, greater domestic energy production and a smaller role for Washington in directing the economy. Recent House Republican descriptions of their agenda emphasize taxes, economic growth, energy production, border security, defense and government efficiency. What kind of immigration system do we want? Border security remains a major dividing line between the parties. The Republican platform calls for stronger enforcement of immigration laws, additional border security and substantially increased deportation of people in the country illegally. How much government do we want? Republicans have traditionally argued that many decisions are better left to individuals, families, businesses, communities and states rather than the federal government. That debate touches taxes, education, health care, regulation and federal spending. What should America’s energy future look like? Republican lawmakers have promoted an “all-of-the-above” approach that includes oil and natural gas along with nuclear, hydropower and other energy sources, arguing that reliability, affordability and national security should be central considerations. What values should guide our communities? Many Republican voters place particular importance on parental authority, religious liberty, the protection of unborn life, public safety and the preservation of traditional institutions. Other Americans disagree strongly on some of these questions. That is precisely why elections matter: they provide citizens a peaceful way to decide who will write the laws and exercise governmental power.
Look Beyond One Man
Republicans do not have to make every election a referendum on Donald Trump.
A voter can support Trump, dislike Trump, have mixed feelings about Trump—or simply be tired of hearing about Trump—and still face important choices about Congress, state government and local government. The better question is not: “What do you think about Donald Trump?” “What direction do you want America to take?” Consider the economy. Consider immigration and the border. Consider crime and public safety. Consider inflation and federal spending. Consider the family and the rights of parents. Consider abortion and the protection of human life. Consider America’s military strength and foreign policy. Consider judges and the courts. Consider how much authority Washington should have over decisions once made closer to home. Then look at the candidates actually running where you live. Read what they say. Examine what incumbents have voted for. Compare their positions. Don’t stop at presidential personalities, television advertising or social-media arguments.
Congress Matters
The president does not govern alone. Congress writes laws, taxes and spends, exercises oversight, and the Senate considers presidential nominations. State legislatures make enormously important decisions as well. Governors, attorneys general, prosecutors, judges, school boards, county officials and city governments can directly affect daily life. That makes a midterm election much more than a national popularity contest. From a Republican viewpoint, the argument for 2026 is therefore straightforward: Vote on principles. Vote on policies. Vote on the direction of the country. Donald Trump is one political figure in a much larger American system of self-government. The Republic belongs to its citizens. And on Election Day, the most important question is not simply who dominates the headlines. The question is: What kind of country do we want to leave to the next generation?
