Neighbors Honoring Heroes: Michigan’s December Tradition with Wreaths Across America

Wreaths Across America (WAA) is a national nonprofit initiative dedicated to remembering the fallen, honoring those who serve, and teaching future generations the value of freedom. Founded in 1992 by Morrill Worcester, the movement began with a simple act of gratitude—placing wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery—and has since grown into a nationwide tradition embraced by communities in all 50 states. Each December, volunteers gather to place fresh evergreen wreaths on veterans’ graves, pausing to say each hero’s name aloud as a personal act of remembrance.

In Michigan, WAA has become a deeply meaningful local tradition with major ceremonies held at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly (near Mount Holly) and the Michigan Veterans Cemetery. On the second Saturday of December—December 13, 2025—families, veterans’ groups, schools, churches, and civic organizations will once again come together to honor those who gave their lives in service to our nation. These gatherings are marked by reverence, gratitude, and a strong sense of community, reminding all present that freedom is never free.

Local participation is the heartbeat of WAA’s success. Volunteers from across Michigan help coordinate logistics, raise awareness, and ensure every eligible grave receives a wreath. Groups such as Team Matrix Expedited Service play an important role in organizing volunteers and supporting the placement efforts, demonstrating how local businesses and service organizations can make a tangible difference. Their involvement reflects the best of Michigan’s spirit—neighbors working side by side to honor our veterans.

Community members can support Wreaths Across America in two meaningful ways: by sponsoring wreaths at $17 each or by volunteering on placement day. Whether giving financially, lending a helping hand, or simply attending the ceremony, participation helps keep the memory of our fallen heroes alive. In Michigan, WAA is more than an event—it is a shared promise to remember, honor, and teach, ensuring that the sacrifices of our veterans are never forgotten.
