And he’s off . . . to Michigan, that is. Rocco’s heading to the Midwest next week touching down in Chelsea on Monday, March 22 and heading on to Detroit on Tuesday, March 23. In Chelsea (population 5,005), the day kicks off with a tour of the Purple Rose Theatre hosted by actor Jeff Daniels, the theater’s founder. After a tour of cultural sites, an afternoon roundtable will focus on Chelsea as a model Art Works small town. In Chelsea, the Chairman also will release a new NEA Research Note. Tuesday’s visit to Detroit will include a number of stops at local art spots, including the Compas Center, the Henry Ford Academy for Creative Studies, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Two public discussions are on the agenda: a panel on using community-based arts and cultural activities to strengthen neighborhoods and encourage civic dialogue, and an Art Works conversation on the revitalization efforts in Detroit’s midtown cultural corridor.
