A Phone-to-Phone Strategy Before the Midterm Elections
By Rev. Richard Dalton — LookUpDetroit.com
Time is running out before the November 3 midterm elections. Millions of voters still need good information about the candidates, issues, and direction of our country.
But how can we reach them quickly, especially younger voters who get much of their information through smartphones?
The answer may be in our pockets.
Addition Versus Multiplication
Traditional outreach often works through addition. Send a message to ten people today, ten tomorrow, and you’ve reached twenty.
But phone-to-phone communication can work through multiplication.
Send a message to two friends. Each shares it with two more. Those four reach eight, then sixteen, then thirty-two.
After ten rounds, more than 2,000 people could receive the message, assuming everyone participates and there is no overlap.
The secret isn’t just spreading information. It’s multiplying the messengers.
Five Advantages of Phone-to-Phone Outreach
- It’s personal. A message from a friend gets attention that an advertisement might never receive.
- It’s fast. Information can travel across campuses, communities, and the country in seconds.
- It’s free. No advertising budget, mailing costs, or expensive technology required.
- It bypasses the usual gatekeepers. Friends can share directly without depending entirely on algorithms, media companies, or paid promotion.
- It multiplies. Every recipient can become another messenger, expanding the network far beyond the original sender.
Young People: You Already Have the Network!
Your smartphone isn’t just an entertainment device. It’s a publishing house in your pocket.
You don’t need thousands of followers or a famous name. You need worthwhile information, trustworthy sources, and a few friends willing to share.
Before forwarding anything, check the facts. Good information deserves to travel farther than misinformation.
With Election Day approaching, this is an opportunity to help one another become better-informed voters.
Person to person. Friend to friend. Phone to phone.
Our goal shouldn’t simply be to reach more people. It should be to encourage more people to reach others.
That’s the difference between addition and multiplication.
And with so little time remaining before the elections, that difference could be enormously important.
Don’t just spread the message. Multiply the messengers!
