The Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus (MOTCC) joins renowned composer and conductor Tim Janis for “Celebrate America” on Detroit Public Television on Friday, March 9, at 9 p.m. With this appearance, the MOTCC joins the ranks of over 18,000 of the nation’s most outstanding young performers, including young stars Jackie Evancho and
Emily Bear.
In November 2011, seventeen southeastern Michigan youth choirs were selected to participate in the televised series “Celebrate America.” The MOTCC performed “Night of Peace/Go Tell It on the Mountain” for the program, conducted by Dianna Hochella.
“‘Celebrate America’ is a national program designed to give our nation’s youth a life-enhancing opportunity by showcasing their choirs on public television,” Janis said. “The director and students of the MOTCC demonstrated tremendous dedication in the preparation of their performance. They’re an undeniable musical force and a shining example of the commitment of today’s youth when encouraged to pursue the arts!”
Tim Janis is well-known and respected for the work he defines as “Music with a Mission.” His career includes producing and supporting many philanthropic projects with artists such as Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, Andre Previn, and the New York Philharmonic.
Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus
The mission of the Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus is to provide exceptional choral music and theatrical performance instruction in a professional environment to young people. Offering a curriculum that embraces diverse cultures and traditions and a rich and extensive range of musical genres, the program seeks to instill personal and artistic excellence in its students. Led by Michigan Opera Theatre Chorus Master Suzanne Mallare Acton and Children’s Chorus Assistant Director and Conductor Dianna Hochella, this permanent children’s choir is the first of its kind for Detroit-area children. Accepting children ages 10-16 by audition, the choir performs as a separate ensemble and with international opera stars in Michigan Opera Theatre productions.
