Metro Detroit’s spring theater season was dominated by sold-out performances of the hip-hop musical juggernaut, but a look at the fall and winter lineup suggests that that ambitious, timely, award-winning plays are produced here nearly every weekend.
Here are 14 productions not to miss during the 2019-20 season.
“Paradise Blue”: Playwright Dominique Morisseau’s soulful account of the last days of a Detroit jazz club, circa 1949. This will be the third (and final play) play in Morisseau’s Detroit trilogy performed by Detroit Public Theatre. Through Nov. 3, Detroit Public Theatre, Max M. and Marjorie S. “The (Curious Case of the) Watson Intelligence”: The story of a young techno geek named Watson who interfaces with other famous Watsons, including Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick and the IBM computer named Watson that defeated a couple of human champs on TV’s “Jeopardy!” in 2011. The time-skipping mix of comedy and drama from Madeleine George was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2014. “Admissions”: The fiercely progressive headmaster of a New Hampshire boarding school and his wife, the dean of admissions, question their views on diversity when their son finds his Ivy League aspirations dashed. With college admission scandals still making headlines, Joshua Harmon’s satirical play could not be more timely. Through Oct. 13, Theatre Nova, 410 W. “A Doll’s House, Part 2”: A sequel to Henrik Ibsen’s landmark 1879 drama that finds the the unhappily married Nora leaving a pampered existence for points unknown. The new play by Lucas Hnath picks up 15 years later as Nora reconnects with the husband and family she left behind. Through Oct. 20, Tipping Point Theatre, 361 E.
