Churches around the Detroit area have changed the definition of roadside service because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Triumph Church’s north campus in Southfield typically hosts thousands of worshippers every Sunday inside its edifice across from the former Northland Mall. But since it now cannot hold services inside because of strict social distancing rules, Triumph has transformed its parking lot into a sanctuary.
Similar to an old drive-in movie theater, members pull their cars into the parking lot, find a suitable spot, turn their radios to 87.9 FM, and watch Pastor Solomon Kinloch deliver his message from a big screen attached to a small semi-truck.
“We wanted to ensure the voice of God could still be articulated out to the community and do it in a way that wasn’t irresponsible to the safety of our members and visiting friends,” said Kinloch, who has been the pastor of Triumph Church for 22 years.
Triumph began holding its drive-in service three weeks ago when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said churches and other houses of worship in Michigan will not be penalized if they hold gatherings under the stay-at-home executive order. Triumph ceased its inside services, but continues its online streaming services and added the drive-in services for members who still wanted to gather, but in a safe manner.
Saturday drive-in services are at 5 p.m. Triumph offers three services on Sunday: 8:45 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. It also offers two Tuesday services at noon and 6:30 p.m. All services are held at the north campus.
