Hundreds of families received free turkeys Thursday in Detroit at the Detroit Police Athletic League headquarters as part of an initiative by Meijer to donate to food banks in the Midwest to ease food insecurity during the pandemic.
Dozens of cars parked at the PAL headquarters on Michigan Avenue in Corktown, waiting for Honeysuckle turkeys to be loaded into their vehicles by volunteers Thursday afternoon. The donation by the grocery chain is part of its $1 million commitment, amounting to 50,000 turkeys, that will go toward tackling hunger in the Midwest.
