The city of Detroit must be very proud of its impressive main public library (DPL) which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. From the carved white marble exterior to the extraordinary interior, it is reminiscent of many palaces and museums I have visited in Eastern Europe.
My grandmother took me to The Detroit Public Library when I was ten and showed me large paintings done by her husband, my grandfather, Vincent Aderente, and his mentor Edwin Blashfield, two artists who contributed to the beauty of this magnificent building.
Pointing out the Poetry lunette in the South window, she said, “Look carefully Glenn, the little girl in the pink dress on the right side of the central figure in Poetry was posed for by your mother.” That was very special.
