Long-gone Detroit Italian restaurant plans a comeback

La Lanterna, a long-gone restaurant from Detroit’s past,  is primed to make a comeback near its former location when it opens on the first floor of the Albert building in Capitol Park later this year.

The northern Italian-style restaurant opened in what is now the Malcolmson Building in 1956 by Italian immigrant Edoardo Barbieri. In 1978, Barbieri opened the first Da Edoardo restaurant in Grosse Pointe Woods.

The revived La Lanterna signifies the third generation of the Barbieri family’s restaurant business.

“It is gratifying to return to the Capitol Park area where our family’s first restaurant was established,” Edward Barbieri III said in a news release announcing the forthcoming restaurant. “We are eager to re-establish La Lanterna as an Italian favorite in Detroit.”
