For a few weekends each year, visitors can step back more than four hundred years without leaving Southeast Michigan. Beginning Saturday, August 22, the Michigan Renaissance Festival returns to Holly, transforming hundreds of wooded acres into a lively sixteenth-century English village filled with knights, musicians, artisans, magicians, and costumed performers.
From the moment guests enter the gates, they are immersed in another era. Trumpets announce royal processions, merchants display handcrafted goods, musicians perform traditional melodies, and entertainers roam the village interacting with visitors throughout the day. One moment you may encounter a juggler, the next a wandering minstrel, and moments later a full-armored knight charging into the jousting arena.
The festival features 17 entertainment stages offering continuous performances including comedy acts, sword fighting demonstrations, illusionists, storytellers, acrobats, and musicians. Children can participate in games, crafts, and interactive experiences while adults browse hundreds of artisan shops featuring woodworking, leather goods, jewelry, pottery, glasswork, and other handmade treasures.
Each weekend introduces a different theme, giving returning visitors something new to enjoy. Popular favorites include Pirates and Pups, Viking Invasion, Highland Fling, and several fantasy-themed celebrations. Costumes are welcomed, though certainly not required, making the festival especially colorful and photogenic.
No Renaissance Festival visit would be complete without sampling the famous oversized turkey legs, roasted nuts, pastries, fresh baked goods, and other medieval-inspired food offerings that have become part of the tradition.
