From the minds behind the Heidelberg Project is Heidelburgers, a restaurant planned to open next summer on Detroit’s east side in the McDougall-Hunt neighborhood, Heidelberg Project President and CEO Jenenne Whitfield said.
Local chef Jeffrie Toney will head up the kitchen during the pop-up and permanent restaurant. The menu staples will be vegan, veggie, turkey and beef burgers alongside fries and other “delicious side fixins,” according to a news release.
Whitfield said the restaurant is part of taking “Heidelberg 3.0 to the next level.” The nonprofit moved its headquarters last year to 3442 McDougall St., a block off Heidelberg Street and couple of blocks southwest of the famed Heidelberg art installation of found objects and paintings. Founder Tyree Guyton announced in 2016 that he would begin dismantling the outdoor project, which has been the target of arson over the years.
