HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON: A DANCE ADVENTURE EXPLORES THE POWER OF IMAGINATION

Saturday, March 3 at the Detroit Opera House

The Detroit Opera House presents Hubbard Street 2‘s production of “Harold and the Purple Crayon: A Dance Adventure for two performances on Saturday, March 3. The hour-long interactive dance adaptation, for children 4 through 11, was inspired by the 1955 classic children’s book by Crockett Johnson. The story tells of a young boy named Harold who, equipped with his purple crayon and an infinite imagination, choreographs his own adventures.

“Harold and the Purple Crayon: A Dance Adventure” is HS2’s first program-length work created specifically for young people and families, who can help create Harold’s next adventure through their own exploration of movement. This project is not only unique to HS2, but to contemporary dance as a whole. While theater and classical ballet companies often cater to families with productions inspired by children’s literature, contemporary dance has seldom focused on narrative choreography, let alone sought inspiration from a children’s novel.

“After reading Harold’s adventures again as an adult, I found myself immediately making connections between how Harold creates his own world with his purple crayon and how we create new works,” said HS2 Director Taryn Kaschock Russell. “I hope that this work will inspire children to use their bodies and imagination to communicate through dance.”

Hubbard Street 2 was formed in 1997 to prepare dancers ages 18-25 for the life of a professional dancer in a contemporary company. The company provides a chance for talented young artists to develop their professional experience, fostering them quickly into dynamic and bold dancers.

The Detroit Opera House’s 2011-12 dance series is made possible by a generous gift from Maggie Allesee.
