With music and lyrics by Tim Minchin (Matilda the Musical) and a book by Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the original film, Groundhog Day: The Musical dazzles with its inventive storytelling, sharp comedy, and a dynamic score. The show won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical and was nominated for seven Tony Awards, solidifying its place as a must-see theatrical experience.
Theatrical Magic Brings Groundhog Day to Life
“We are thrilled to bring Groundhog Day: The Musical to Southeast Michigan for the very first time,” said Danielle Caralis, director of the production. “This show is a beautiful blend of comedy and heart, with a message that resonates deeply—about embracing change, finding joy in the little moments, and making every day count.”
Caralis is thrilled with the performances of her cast, who take on multiple roles to bring the quirky town of Punxsutawney to life. “I’ve been so lucky to have such a talented cast to work with,” she said. “They are delivering performances that are incredible, nuanced, and funny.”
For those unfamiliar with the original film, the stage production still offers a compelling and engaging experience. “The theme in this story is timeless— ‘How would you spend the day if you had only one day to live? How would you make the most of it? Would you be your best self?’” asked Caralis.
At its core, Groundhog Day: The Musical reminds audiences that no matter what happens today, “tomorrow there will be sun.’
