Grosse Pointe Theatre begins its 75th anniversary season with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Joseph is a biblical story told through songs in a variety of different musical genres. This family production opened Sept. 16 and runs through Sept 25, with a special Sensory-Friendly performance Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. Performances are held at Grosse Pointe North’s Christian A. Fenton Performing Arts Center, in Grosse Pointe Woods.
Originally scheduled for June of 2020 but delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions, Director Amy Ricker of Washington Township is excited to finally be able to share this fabulous show with audiences. “Dreams do come true, even when the going gets tough!” said Ricker.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was originally produced in the 70’s, with a popular reboot in the 90’s starring Donny Osmond, but it is still vastly relevant today. Ricker added, “It is a story that is timeless. The message of not giving up on people, standing firm on your beliefs, forgiveness (with a little fun), and most of all following your dreams.”
The talent and creative energy of the 34-member cast of Joseph is an exciting kickoff to Grosse Pointe Theatre’s 75th anniversary season. But Joseph isn’t the only treat for GPT audiences this season. Other productions include A Christmas Carol the musical, November 25 – December 4, directed by Kevin Fitzhenry; Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound, January 27 – February 5, 2023, directed by Laura Ver Beek; Clue – On Stage, March 2 -12, directed by Olyvia O’Donnell; and the season finale, Something Rotten, May 5 -14, directed by GPT President Danielle Caralis. Grosse Pointe Theatre is thrilled to launch its new Sensory Friendly program with the Saturday, September 24, 2 p.m. performance of Joseph. Sensory-friendly performances are designed to create a welcoming and comfortable arts experience for people with autism, sensory sensitivities, or other social, learning or cognitive disabilities. The performance is also perfect for young children as a first live theatre experience.
