In the heart of Detroit, where many children face adversity, poverty, and violence, one neighborhood ministry stands out for its persistent love and caring action. Since 1989, Good News Gang has been dedicated to equipping the children of Detroit to become leaders of the next generation.
Led by Pastor Matt Cripps of Metro Life Church, Good News Gang travels into some of Detroit’s toughest neighborhoods in a fleet of buses. These buses are more than transportation — they are symbols of hope. Every Saturday morning, they bring children to a safe, structured environment filled with faith, fun, relationships, and encouragement.
Each gathering offers a blend of worship, Bible teaching, and caring mentorship, along with tutoring, games, and life lessons. Volunteers invest time and heart in the children, helping them discover their worth and potential in Christ. Many of the children come from homes filled with instability or hopelessness, yet they find joy, safety, and encouragement through these weekly programs.
Parents often notice a change in their children. One mother said, “Pastor Matt has a nice way of working with the children. It’s fun and a good experience to get the kids out — away from all of the violence and crime that’s in the neighborhood.”
The ministry also reaches beyond spiritual needs. Volunteers provide school supplies, food, and warm clothing to remove barriers that often hold families back. Through consistent presence and compassion, Good News Gang has become a trusted friend in communities that are too often overlooked.
Despite challenges such as vandalism and financial strain, the ministry remains steadfast. Pastor Cripps reminds his team that their ultimate mission is not just to clean up neighborhoods, but to change hearts — because when hearts are transformed, communities change too.
In a city that has seen its share of struggle, Good News Gang shines as a story of faith, hope, and transformation — one Saturday, one bus ride, one child at a time.
