Focus: HOPE is a nationally recognized civil and human rights organization based in Detroit, Michigan. Founded in 1968 by Father William T. Cunningham and Eleanor Josaitis in response to the Detroit uprising, the organization has been dedicated to using intelligent and practical action to fight racism, poverty, and injustice. Over the years, Focus: HOPE has developed a range of programs aimed at empowering individuals and fostering a harmonious community where people of all backgrounds can live in freedom and trust.
One of the organization’s earliest initiatives was the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), which began in the early 1970s. This program provides monthly food packages to over 41,000 seniors across Southeast Michigan, helping to meet their basic nutritional needs. The CSFP has been instrumental in combating malnutrition among vulnerable populations and remains a cornerstone of Focus: HOPE’s efforts to address food insecurity in the community.
In addition to addressing immediate needs, Focus: HOPE has established comprehensive education and job training programs to promote long-term economic self-sufficiency. The Machinist Training Institute (MTI), launched in 1981, prepares individuals for careers in advanced manufacturing and engineering. The organization offers a holistic approach to workforce development, with scholarship-based programs that are free to most students. Focus: HOPE also places a strong emphasis on community development and youth empowerment. The Center for Children provides early childhood education and care, including Montessori preschool programs and after-school activities for children up to age twelve. Additionally, the organization has implemented community arts programs, such as “Focus on the Mission,” which brings together inner-city and suburban teenagers to foster cultural understanding and respect through collaborative art projects.
