Pewabic Pottery will host its 18th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser to benefit Gleaners Community Food Bank Saturday, Feb. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pewabic Pottery located at 10125 E. Jefferson Ave. in Detroit.
“This event is a wonderful way for the community to bring delicious food and art together for a good cause,” said Terese Ireland, executive director of Pewabic Pottery. “The need is still great in metro Detroit and we are proud to do our part to help fill some of those Empty Bowls.”
With the purchase of an artist or student bowl ranging from $5 to $20, guests will receive soup and bread donated from local restaurants including Polish Kitchen, Vivios, Russell Street Deli, Sindbad’s, St. John’s Hospital, Beverly Hills Grill and Lunchtime Detroit. There is a limit of two bowls per person and no sales before 11a.m. Guests are invited into enjoy soup in the upstairs gallery or tile showroom until 2 p.m. and shopping until 6 p.m.
One hundred percent of proceeds from the event are donated to Gleaners Community Food Bank. For each dollar raised, Gleaner’s can provide three meals to someone in need. Last year, Pewabic’s Empty Bowls event raised $5,000, which helped provide 15,000 meals.
The concept of Empty Bowls began in 1990 when a Michigan art teacher wanted to come up with a way for his students to help out with the issue of hunger in local communities. Since then, the Empty Bowls project has grown to be an international initiative. Pewabic Pottery has hosted its annual Empty Bowls fundraiser since 1994.
Pewabic Pottery is a non-profit arts and cultural organization and National Historic Landmark which is dedicated to engaging people of all ages in learning experiences with contemporary ceramic art and artists while preserving its historic legacy.
Pewabic is a historic working pottery which is open to the public year round and offers classes, workshops and tours to children and adults. Pewabic creates giftware, pottery and architectural tile, showcases more than 80 ceramic artists in its galleries, and operates a museum store that features pottery and gift tile made on-site.
