Detroit’s Thanksgiving Day parade is still scheduled to happen next week as a smaller, spectator-free and TV-only production and has not been canceled because of the state’s newly tightened COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
“We’ve gone way, way, way beyond the guidelines because this is so important to bring to the people of Detroit, the region and the state,” said Tony Michaels, president and CEO of The Parade Co., which puts on the annual event.
Michigan’s new public health order, announced Sunday by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and taking effect at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, limits attendance at outdoor events to no more than 20 individuals per 1,000 square feet.
This year’s America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade presented by Gardner-White will not conflict with those guidelines because the roughly 800 participants will be stretched out over 1¼ miles, Michaels said. In addition, participants will be wearing masks and keeping at least a 6-foot distance from each other.
