Detroit public schools will offer more dual enrollment options through Wayne County Community College District for high school students seeking pathways to jobs in a variety of industries.
Detroit Public Schools Community District is growing its partnership with the six-campus community college. The deal will allow students the option of 27 courses in seven industry areas: business and entrepreneurship, health care; technology, media and arts; law, education and public safety; engineering, manufacturing and transportation; construction; and the service industry.
Different high schools will be designated as pathways for specific industries. The district expects every high school to offer dual enrollment classes aligned to certain career paths by 2020. Fourteen of 22 high schools currently offer specific industry-oriented courses. The district refers to them as “career academies,” responding to the demands of employers in high-demand fields.
