The Detroit People Mover plans to offer free rides throughout 2024.
Instead of charging for rides, the elevated rail system in downtown Detroit plans to offset the loss in fares through sponsorships, according to a news release.
The fare-free service, which is being described as a pilot program, will start on Jan. 2. The 2.9-mile system is closed on Jan. 1. A standard fare is 75 cents.
Sponsor details are expected to be released at a later date.
