Excitement surrounding the new Nike Community Store downtown is hard to miss, with a long line wrapping around the corner of Woodward and Grand River avenues Thursday morning.
And the store might lead to even bigger things for Detroit.
Dennis Van Oossanen, Nike vice president of global merchandising, said other retailers tend to file in quickly behind a Nike Community store.
“When Nike opens their community stores, others will follow,” Van Oossanen said just before the store opened Thursday.
The 22,000-square-foot store at 1261 Woodward Ave. is a feather in the cap for Nike as much as it is for Bedrock Detroit, the real estate arm of Quicken Loans Founder Dan Gilbert.
The storefront was one of the biggest retail spaces in Bedrock’s arsenal, Dan Mullen, executive vice president of Bedrock Detroit, said.
