Detroit-inspired American Girl doll to be introduced this weekend

American Girl is introducing its new, historical Detroit-inspired doll Saturday at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

The popular doll retailer spent two to three years researching and developing Melody Ellison and its product line, seeking cultural and historical accuracy, said company spokesperson Stephanie Spanos.

American Girl is a Mattel company with a new Michigan location that sells high-end dolls with elaborate background stories

Spanos said the company typically spends years developing historical characters.

Melody Ellison is described as a positive, optimistic girl growing up in Detroit in the 1960s with a background story of the civil rights movement and the Motown music scene.
