Only a year ago, Callahan Park on Detroit’s east side was just another empty space, abandoned and used as a dumping ground.
Today, it’s turning into a haven for bird watchers.

Now, the park is receiving new life with the help of the city and an environmental conservation organization.
Callahan Park, along with four other parks in the city, is turning into native grassland thanks to Detroit Audubon and a $33,450 grant from National Geographic.
The idea is to lure more birds to the area.
By planting native flowers and grasses, bird watchers soon will begin seeing species like the indigo bunting, sparrows, pheasants, goldfinch and catbirds. The Detroit Bird City project is part of the larger Detroit Area Native Grasslands Initiative.
