Limited Engagement, February 14 – 16
The Detroit Opera House’s 18th season of dance continues with the return of Dance Theatre of Harlem with three performances Valentine’s Day weekend, from Feb. 14-16. Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and the late Karel Shook in the basement of a church in 1969, the company began as a way to bring discipline and focus to a challenged community. DTH’s unprecedented success as a racially diverse company, school and source of arts education was built on creating innovative and bold new forms of artistic expression. The company returns to Detroit for the second consecutive year, following a successful presentation last season.
Shortly after the assassination of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mitchell was inspired to start a school that would offer children – especially those in Harlem, the community where he was born – the opportunity to learn about dance. Now in its fourth decade, the company has grown into a multi-cultural dance institution with an extraordinary legacy of providing opportunities for creative expression and artistic excellence. DTH has performed for audiences in New York City, across the country and around the world.
The company’s Detroit repertory will include works choreographed by Marius Petipa, Thaddeus Davis, Tanya Wideman, Viriginia Johnson, Ulysses Dove, and Robert Garland, to music from Glazunov, Tommy DeFranz, Arvo Part, and Bach. Complete repertory information can be found at www.MichiganOpera.org.
The DTH performances are part of the Detroit Opera House’s 2013-14 season of Dance in the D, made possible by Lear Corporation, Ford Motor Company, DTE Energy, MGM Grand Detroit, General Motors Foundation, Comerica, and Dance Ensemble of Michigan.
