Multiple Beaumont hospitals in metro Detroit are offering curbside testing for the coronavirus as the number of cases in Michigan continues to rise.
Officials announced eight new cases Saturday night, bringing the total number to 33 cases statewide.
Beaumont says it is offering testing to those who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 — coughing, fever and shortness of breath — at Beaumont hospitals in Royal Oak, Dearborn, Farmington Hills and Troy. Beaumont announced the testing would take place on Saturday and Sunday, but it was not immediately clear whether “drive-through” tests would continue beyond the weekend.
If medical staff determine a patient needs to be tested, they will collect a specimen and send it to a lab for testing.
McLaren Macomb Hospital also announced it is offering curbside testing.
“We are offering this limited screening option to help reduce the spread of the virus. Many people who develop COVID-19 should stay home, drink lots of fluids, rest and take over-the-counter medications, like pain relievers,” Dr. Nick Gilpin, Beaumont Health’s medical director of Infection Prevention and Epidemiology, said in a statement.
As limited tests are available, officials are reminding those who think they may have the virus to call one of multiple COVID-19 hotlines. State health officials set up a statewide hotline that is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week at 1-888-535-6136.
Beaumont also has a hotline available at 248-551-700, open Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Henry Ford Health System has a 24-hour hotline at 313-874-7500.
Patients with confirmed infection have reported mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of: fever, cough, shortness of breath and/or pneumonia.
