Dream Cruise-goers and do-gooders can have fun AND give back August 15-20
Attention cruisers, car fans and just about anyone looking for a great deal: Want to have fun and do good at the same time? The Salvation Army needs your gently used clothing and household goods.
The Salvation Army Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Center (SE ARC) will host a Woodward Dream Cruise donation drive beginning Monday, August 15 and running through Woodward Dream Cruise day, Saturday, August 20, at Olga’s Kitchen, located at 30332 Woodward Ave., in Royal Oak.
A Salvation Army truck will be in the Olga’s parking lot from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, ready to be filled with apparel items for adults and children, plus accessories, linens, home décor and other nearly new goods to sell in its 32 metro Detroit area family and thrift stores. Those who donate will also receive a discount coupon to use in any of the thrift stores as well.
“We are so thankful to Olga’s Kitchen for hosting us the whole week. We need gently used clothing and household items, and we’ll be providing tax donation receipts on site as well,” said Merle Miller, administrator of The Salvation Army Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Center.
The goods will be sold in The Salvation Army’s 32 thrift stores in metro Detroit, with proceeds benefitting the nonprofit’s Adult Rehabilitation Centers, which provide free substance abuse rehabilitation for men and women in the area. The Salvation Army programs are independently funded, and receive no assistance from the government.
The A.R.C. Singers will also perform from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, August 20 at the Phoenix Amphitheater in downtown Pontiac.
The A.R.C. (Adults Returning to Christ) Singers were formed in 1996 by a group of men then living in The Salvation Army Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Center on Fort Street in Detroit. The founding members sang at the Sunday morning worship service. Membership at that time fluctuated between 12 and 30 members. Eventually, the group, including current ARC musical director Charles Champion, wished to be more than a choir of volunteers. A search began for ARC residents with musical talent and experience, and a dedicated singing group was formed soon after. The A.R.C. Singers’ eight members and band released their third album, “Pure Joy,” in December 2010.
Founded by William Booth in London, England, in 1865, The Salvation Army is a faith-based, non-profit organization dedicated to serving people in need without discrimination. The ARC is an integral part of TSA’s mission, and offers substance-abusing adults the opportunity to rebuild their lives through a voluntary, short-term residential self-help program designed to establish a sense of dignity, self-esteem and personal strength that will allow them to resist the desire to abuse a substance and regain their rightful place as contributing members of society. Completely self-funded, the ARC draws its entire operating budget from the revenue of the 32 Salvation Army Thrift Stores located in Southeast Michigan.
