Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historical Site & African Canadian Heritage Tour

Join the Friends Committee of The Wright Museum for this memorable heritage tour that will take you along the Underground Railroad to relive the plight of those who sought freedom under the Northern Star. At a bend in the Sydenham River near the town of Dresden, Ontario stands Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site. It commemorates the life of Reverend Josiah Henson – renowned abolitionist, preacher and “conductor” on the underground railroad. Henson rose to international fame after Harriet Beecher Stowe acknowledged his memoirs as a source for her 1852 anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. His dramatic experiences and his connection with Stowe’s book made him one of the most famous Canadians of his day. Other stops may include Amherstberg, Ontario, Black Historical Museum/Nazrey African Methodist Episcopal Church. The Voices of the Civil War is a five-year film series dedicated to celebrating and commemorating the Civil War over the course of the sesquicentennial. Each month, new episodes cover pertinent topics that follow the monthly events and issues as they unfolded for African Americans during the Civil War. Within these episodes there are various primary sources – letters and diaries, newspaper reports, and more – to recount various experiences of blacks during this period.
