Black History Month is starting off with cooperative economics at the forefront.
The Detroit Civil Rights Inclusion and Opportunity Department and NAACP are kicking BHM into high gear with their Black Business Crawl. This event tailored to all businesses in Detroit who are 51% or more black-owned. Each handpicked business will be featured in the #ShopBlackDetroit Black Business Crawl Guide. This same hashtag can be used to promote the event online.
The event will take place on February 22. Here are some interesting black history facts about February 22:
- In 1911, activist and social reformer Frances Ellis Watkins Harper died
- In 1938, poet Ishmael Reed was born
- In 1950, legendary basketball player Julius “Dr. J” Erving was born
- In 1989, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince won the first rap Grammy for their single “Parents Just Don’t Understand.”
