Caleb White has been serving others for most of his young life. Since he was six years old, he has found ways to help and care for the homeless in and around Detroit. He even started his own nonprofit organization aimed at helping those on the streets when he was just 12 years old.
Now a 17-year-old graduating senior of Detroit Catholic Central High School in Novi, White is unable to celebrate his graduation with traditional fanfare. For someone who has given much of his life to helping others, he cannot fully celebrate one of the biggest milestones a teenager can experience thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.
While sheltering at home these last couple of months, White found an opportunity to turn the frustrations of a pandemic into a message of hope by submitting a commencement speech for the Doritos Valedictorian contest. In the end, White’s speech was one of five across the nation selected as a winner, earning him a prize of $50,000 in aid toward college tuition.
