There is nothing quite like the Woodward Dream Cruise. Every August, Metro Detroit becomes the center of the automotive world as more than one million spectators gather along historic Woodward Avenue to celebrate America’s love affair with the automobile. On Saturday, August 15, more than 40,000 classic cars, muscle cars, hot rods, customs, vintage trucks, and specialty vehicles will cruise the famous 16-mile stretch from Ferndale to Pontiac.
The Dream Cruise is much more than a parade of beautiful vehicles. It is a celebration of Detroit’s heritage as the Motor City. Families line the sidewalks with lawn chairs, cameras, and coolers while generations of car enthusiasts swap stories about Mustangs, Corvettes, GTOs, Model A Fords, Camaros, and countless other automotive legends. Many owners spend years restoring their vehicles, and they’re eager to share their passion with anyone who stops to admire them.
Each of the nine host communities adds its own personality to the celebration. Ferndale offers a lively downtown atmosphere, Royal Oak fills with music and restaurants, Birmingham showcases elegant classic automobiles, Bloomfield Township provides quieter viewing areas, and Pontiac often features large gatherings of specialty vehicles. Many communities begin the festivities Friday evening with smaller cruise nights, concerts, and community events that continue throughout the weekend.
One of the best parts of the Dream Cruise is that it remains completely free to enjoy. You don’t need a ticket, registration, or special pass. Simply choose your favorite viewing location, arrive early, and spend the day watching an endless procession of automotive history roll past. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen, water, folding chairs, and perhaps a small cooler for the day.
To reduce traffic congestion, SMART provides complimentary shuttle service along portions of the route between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., making it much easier to visit multiple communities without moving your own vehicle.
Whether you’re a lifelong gearhead or simply enjoy spending time with family outdoors, the Woodward Dream Cruise is one of Metro Detroit’s signature events and an experience every Michigan resident should enjoy at least once.
