Some Halloween events try to frighten visitors.
Hallowe’en in Greenfield Village does something different.
Beginning October 1, Greenfield Village becomes a lantern-lit world of harvest traditions, storybook characters, ghostly performances and more than 1,000 illuminated jack-o’-lanterns. The event runs October 1–4, 8–11, 15–18 and 22–25 from 6 to 9:30 p.m.
This is the 46th season for one of Metro Detroit’s best-known October traditions.
Visitors encounter more than 50 costumed characters inspired by stories including The Wizard of Oz, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Alice in Wonderland. Greenfield Village also incorporates eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Halloween customs, music and dramatic literary scenes.
That is what makes the event more interesting than an ordinary haunted attraction.
Children can enjoy Halloween while also stepping into literature, history and older American traditions.
Families can add a ride on the Hallowe’en Express for an additional charge, and Greenfield Village offers special dining experiences during the season.
For younger children, the Hallowe’en Fairy Tale Feast combines a themed buffet, storybook characters, horse-drawn wagon transportation and access to the evening celebration. As of September 17, some dates were already limited, so families interested in special dining should check availability quickly.
This is one of those Metro Detroit traditions that can easily become multigenerational.
Parents remember going as children.
Grandparents bring grandchildren.
And Greenfield Village manages to make October feel just a little older, stranger and more magical.
