The Woodward Dream Cruise Is Back Saturday — Here’s What You Need to Know

For one remarkable Saturday every August, Woodward Avenue becomes much more than a road. It becomes a rolling museum of American automotive history.

The Woodward Dream Cruise returns Saturday, August 15, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., bringing classic cars, muscle cars, customs, cruisers and spectators to communities along Woodward from Ferndale north toward Pontiac.

Metro Detroit could hardly have a more appropriate place for such a celebration. Automobiles shaped the region’s industry, neighborhoods, architecture and identity. The Dream Cruise gives people an opportunity to see some of that history still moving under its own power.

Individual communities add their own attractions. Birmingham, for example, plans a classic car show, sponsor displays and food and retail vendors along South Old Woodward from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

One of this year’s most useful features is free SMART shuttle service from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Riders can hop on and off along the Woodward route from Ferndale to downtown Pontiac, avoiding some of the parking and traffic challenges associated with the Cruise.

Families may want to select one community rather than trying to see everything. Bring water, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and perhaps folding chairs. Then enjoy one of Metro Detroit’s signature celebrations.
