Detroit’s Riverfront Is Becoming a Giant Outdoor Classroom

There is an unusual opportunity on the Detroit Riverfront Monday evening: learn to recognize the plants growing around us.

The Riverfront Herbal Walk takes place Monday, August 10, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Cullen Plaza, 1340 Atwater Street. Participants join local herbalists for an easy walk and learn how to identify and engage with plants found along the Riverfront.

It is a simple idea, but an appealing one. Many of us walk past trees, flowers and wild plants every day without knowing their names or stories.

A guided walk changes that.

For families, it can transform an ordinary stroll into a treasure hunt. For adults, it may open a new appreciation for the natural environment growing alongside one of Detroit’s busiest urban corridors.

Cullen Plaza itself makes a good starting point for a longer evening along the water. Bike rentals and Riverfront exploration are available there as well.

Programs like this illustrate something important about Detroit’s revitalized waterfront: it is not simply scenery. Increasingly, it is a place to exercise, learn, play and meet neighbors.
