New Detroit ToolBank to Equip Community Groups With Shared Tools for Neighborhood Projects

A new Detroit ToolBank is being launched to support community organizations across the city by providing affordable access to professional-grade tools and equipment. The initiative is backed by Ford Motor Company and Carhartt, two companies with deep roots in Michigan and a shared commitment to strengthening local neighborhoods through practical investment.

The Detroit ToolBank will operate as a centralized tool-lending hub, allowing nonprofits, schools, churches, and neighborhood groups to borrow tools needed for construction, cleanup, landscaping, and revitalization projects. Rather than purchasing expensive equipment that may only be used occasionally, organizations will be able to access what they need when they need it, freeing up limited budgets for programing, staffing, and direct community impact.

This new location will become part of ToolBank USA, a national nonprofit network that has helped communities across the country complete thousands of volunteer-driven projects. By reducing the financial barriers to hands-on service, ToolBank locations help mobilize volunteers more efficiently while improving safety and project quality through access to proper equipment.

Ford and Carhartt see the Detroit ToolBank as more than a lending library—it is also an investment in workforce development and the skilled trades. By putting real tools into the hands of community groups and volunteers, the program encourages practical learning, job readiness, and exposure to construction and technical skills that remain essential to the region’s economic future.

At its core, the Detroit ToolBank represents a simple but powerful idea: when communities are equipped, they can build. By supporting local groups with shared resources, the initiative strengthens collaboration, reduces waste, and helps neighborhoods take tangible steps toward renewal—one project, one volunteer team, and one set of tools at a time.
