Forget the Comedy Club – Come See This Great Story and Musical!

We smiled and laughed throughout this great performance of Groundhog Day: The Musical at Grosse Pointe Theatre – and we weren’t alone. With a wonderful cast, powerful singing, a lively orchestra, and crisp choreography, this production hits all the right notes. It’s a joyful ride with a meaningful reminder that every day is a chance to grow… even if you have to live it a few dozen times.

Performance Dates: March 28–30 and April 2–6
Location: Pierce Middle School, Grosse Pointe Park
(Yes, you can come back again… and again… and again – just like Phil.)

Based on the beloved 1993 film starring Bill Murray, this musical features music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and a book by Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the original screenplay. It premiered in London at The Old Vic in 2016, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Musical, and then made its Broadway debut in 2017, earning seven Tony Award nominations.

Now, for the first time in Metro Detroit, Grosse Pointe Theatre brings this time-twisting tale to life. Directed by Danielle Caralis, the production stars Mario Simone as the ever-sarcastic weatherman Phil Connors and Manda Borden as Rita Hanson. With clever staging, expressive lighting, and smooth transitions through the “time loop” scenes, the audience is swept into Phil’s hilarious and heartfelt transformation.

Any Groundhog Humor?
Well… there’s no actual groundhog on stage, but we’ll just say Phil isn’t the only one stealing the spotlight. (And don’t worry – no animals were forced to relive February 2nd in the making of this production!)

Whether you’re a fan of the film or seeing the story for the first time, this show is absolutely worth watching – and telling your friends about… again and again!
