The city of Detroit could buy back an abandoned motel near Wayne State University that it offloaded years ago.
The derelict University Motel, at 5841 Second Ave. in Midtown and bordering Interstate 94, has been owned since November 2017 by the nonprofit community and development group Midtown Detroit Inc.
The group bought the motel from the city, along with a neighboring house at 5847 Second Ave., for $600,000. It initially planned to redevelop the site with a “micro-unit” residential and hotel development.
