Metro Detroit charities found a little something — or, rather, a big something — under the tree this year from the billionaire, philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott.
Six area community groups received a portion of the $4.2 billion that Scott donated to 384 charities across the county over the last four months, according to an announcement from Scott on Tuesday.
The unexpected gifts come with no strings attached.
Scott, the former wife of Amazon CEO and richest man in the world Jeff Bezos, is currently the 18th richest person in the world, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires index.
Her team researched 6,490 groups before making the donations, targeted to the economic strife brought on by the novel coronavirus, she said in her announcement.
